Project Background
The Civica Scuola Interpreti e Traduttori Altiero Spinelli is a historic institution in Milan, originally built in the 1930s. Working alongside the architects of Fondazione Milano on a renovation project, Roberta Cesani, Laura Zanetti and I were responsible for the visual identity of the spaces: wayfinding, signage, and typographic installation.
We designed a custom pictogram system inspired by Gill Sans, a typeface with roots in the same decade as the building. The pictograms guide students, teachers, and staff through classrooms and common areas with a visual language that connects the school's history to its present.
At the heart of the project is a mural installation featuring ten articles from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, each in a different language spoken at the school: Italian, Arabic, Russian, English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese. Language as subject, language as decoration, language as architecture.
